|Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915), list of works|
|Victorian England's best-selling woman writer, Mary Elizabeth Braddon wrote over 80 novels, 9 plays and numerous short stories during her 55-year career. She used to knock a couple of years off her age and say she was born in 1837, but her birth certificate says 1835. An actress for several years before becoming a full-time writer, she became famous in 1862 with Lady Audley's Secret. This sensation tale of bigamy and murder was an instant best-seller. For many years Braddon lived with her publisher John Maxwell, bearing him six children and marrying him after his first wife's death in 1874. Braddon's friends included Henry James and Oscar Wilde. Her works have been adapted for film, TV and radio.|
