Influenced by Sir Walter Scott, Ainsworth wrote historical adventure novels such as Sir John Chiverton and Crichton). Straddling the life of an editor and that of a writer, he worked for and eventually owned the periodical Bentley's Miscellany, replacing the discontented Charles Dickens. Eventually, Ainsworth founded a publication bearing his own name, Ainsworth's Magazine (1842). |
