Franz Bopp (1791 - 1867)
One of the first modern comparative grammarians, Franz Bopp helped to initiate the field of historical linguistics with his identification of the Indo-European family of languages. Bopp's pioneering works include comparative studies of such languages as Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin.
