Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528),  list of works
A child prodigy, Albrecht Dürer had already completed an accomplished, professional self-portrait at the age of 13. He started out as an apprentice to his father, a goldsmith, but was soon a student of the painter Michel Wolgemut. He made several trips from his German home to Italy, where he learned from the Italian painters, studying their style. Dürer was particularly inspired by their intellect, for German painters were not thought of as artists who explored concepts and ideas in their paintings, but rather as artisans, only making art for decorative purposes. When he returned to Germany, he used the Italian renaissance principles within a German Gothic milieu, becoming the most respected Northern European artist of his time.
