 | | A Russian painter known for his contribution to expressionism, Aristarkh Vasilievich was a member of the Knave of Diamonds, an avant-garde group whose daring exhibitions were well-known throughout Europe in the early 20th century. Born 1882 near Penza, Lentulov studied in Kiev, St. Petersburg, and Paris before settling in Moscow to do stage design in 1915. His painting is characterized by dynamically colliding, loudly colored planes and anticipates cubism in a style often called "cubofuturism." Lentulov spent his later life teaching and artistically came to prefer a more tonal, naturalistic style. |
