 | | Born in the West Indies to a wealthy Jewish father and a Creole mother who moved together to Paris in 1842, Camille Pisarro was plagued by feelings of alienation and Otherness throughout his life, feelings that were not allayed by the rather pitiful lack of recognition and poor financial circumstances the endured for most of his life. Pissaro had to run away from home for two years to convince his father that he was serious about wanting to be a painter, and he was eventually allowed to enroll in the École des Beaux-Arts. After his study, he began to work with the Impressionists, exhibiting in all eight of their exhibitions. His style shifted perpetually, influencing and being influenced by many other artists, including Gauguin, Cézanne, Cassatt, Seurat, and Monet; through all of his changes, however, his devotion to his subjective perception of nature remained solid. |
