 | | Claude Monet, the most respected of the 19th century French Impressionists, broke away from conventions not so much by painting landscapes as by painting light. The son of a grocer, Monet showed artistic interest from an early age, and received early instruction from Camille Pisarro, later working with Renoir and developing an Impressionist style. He worked mainly on natural scenes throughout his life, often in series, capturing the fleeting effects of natural light with a delicate sensibility that reflected his subject matter flawlessly. |
