| Frederick Edwin Church (1826-1900), list of works |
 |
 | | An adventurer as well as an artist, Frederick Edwin Church was influenced in his landscape painting by philosophy and literature as well as by nature and the teachings of other artists. After studying with Thomas Cole, one of America's most famous landscape painters, Church broke with Cole's fantastical style of landscape, preferring his own. His was a more modern American style, influenced by the writings of Thoreau and Emerson. Inspired by Alexander von Humboldt's Kosmos, Church took several trips to South America, where he gathered much visual material for his landscapes. In its explosiveness of style, Church's work prefigured much 20th century painting. |
