John Galsworthy

1867-1933

Famous for writing scornful satire of his own upper-middle-class roots, Galsworthy is best known for his trilogy of novels The Forsyte Saga, in which he satirizes bourgeois materialism. His other works include additional novels about the Forsyte family and a number of plays, including The Silver Box. Galsworthy turned down knighthood in 1918, but went on to win the 1932 Nobel Prize in literature.
