Alexander Nikolayevich Serov

1820 - 1871

 

 

Initially a civil servant and author of some inconsequential cello/piano duets that were popular on the party circuit, Aleksandr Nikolaievich Serov gave up governmental work at the age of 31 in order to pursue a career as an opera composer. Though he came close to starvation more than once, Serov eventually produced the operas Judith and Rogneda - the latter of which was so popular that the czar granted its composer a sizable pension.
