 | An elusive and eccentric painter, Hiëronymus Bosch left precious little evidence of his work and life for art historians to examine. Although there are nearly forty paintings attributed to Bosch, none of them are dated and only seven are signed. His bizarre and allegorical imagery was completely atypical of his time period, and has led historians to interpret his works - probably incorrectly - as reflections of his involvement in a heretical cult. One of the first artists in Western art to illuminate abstract concepts through symbology, Bosch, though popular in his own time, was not to see any real legacy until the works of the Surrealists. |
