Jean-Georges Kastner

1810 - 1867

Coerced by his father into studying theology, Jean-Georges Kastner quietly augmented his religious work with musical activities. After finding some success as an opera composer, Kastner ditched theology and attended the Paris Conservatoire - where he became known for a series of treatises and instrumental methods. He gave lessons in his free time, married a wealthy pupil, and kept writing. Though his compositions were never as devastatingly brilliant as his scholarly work, Kastner does hold the distinction of being among the first composers to write for the alto saxophone. (His son Georges was to invent an organ-like instrument called the pyrophone, powered by flame.)
