Antonio Benelli

Noted for his distinctive, light singing voice, Antonio Benelli was renowned as a performer, teacher, and composer of vocal works. Though a native of Naples, he spent several years in England before moving to Dresden and gaining fame for his performances in the operas of Paisiello and Gluck. Later in life, after his voice was gone, Benelli switched to teaching; however, he lost most of his students when he published a vitriolic attack on the works of Gaspare Spontini in 1829. He died a year later in poverty and ignominy.
