Franz Wilhelm Abt

1819 - 1885

The son of a clergyman noted for his undying love of the piano, Franz Wilhelm Abt was extremely young when he began studying music at Leipzig University. While there, he struck up friendships with Mendelssohn and Schumann, and developed a passion for choral conducting. Abt became the most famous choral conductor in Germany, at one time or another leading every major choral society in the region. He was also one of the most prolific composers in European history, completing some 3000 works spread among 600 opus numbers.
