Gustave Caillebotte

1848-1894

Gustave Caillebotte was a key figure in the early Impressionist movement, even though his style was more traditional and academic than those of his contemporaries. He helped organize one of the first Impressionist exhibits. Caillebotte's painting style was quite unique, combining elements of drawing and modeling from traditional painting with the color schemes and subject matter of the Impressionists. He almost completely lost interest in painting later in his career and turned solely to collecting for involvement in the art world; Caillebotte's collection, left to the French government, is an important legacy of Impressionist work.
