Édouard Lalo

1823 - 1892

After a protracted argument with his militaristic father, who didn't approve of his son's desire to pursue a musical career, Édouard Lalo packed his bags and left home for good. Though he worked tenaciously as a violinist and composer, he remained unknown after many decades of work - this despite the composition of his opera Fiesque, which was published but never performed. In his fiftieth year, several of Lalo's instrumental works enjoyed a brief popularity. Hoping that greater acclaim was waiting for him, Lalo wrote a new opera entitled Le roi d'Ys. No one wanted anything to do with it. Even as he worked on new orchestral pieces, Lalo pressured theaters to mount his opera - which one of them finally did in 1888. Le roi d'Ys was a smash hit, and for the last few years of his life Édouard Lalo was able to bask in the glow of a success that had nearly come too late.
