Zdenek Fibich

1850 - 1900

Son of a Czech forestry official, Zdenek Fibich was a prolific prodigy who had composed nearly fifty works - including part of an opera - by the age of fifteen. After studying with Moscheles and Richter, he rose to become one of the most prominent composers of the time, famous mainly for his massive and supremely effective operas. Also a teacher, Fibich became embroiled in a sticky situation when he fell in love with Anezka Schulzová, one of his piano students. Ignoring the consequences, he asked her to write the libretto for his next opera - thereby setting in motion a tumultuous and passionate relationship that would continue until his death.
