Henry Purcell

1659-1695

Court composer to three generations of British royalty - and that despite rumors that he was a Papist sympathizer - Henry Purcell was astonishingly prolific considering the brevity of his career. Among his many well-known works are the operas Dido and Aeneas and The Fairy Queen, a series of odes and anthems, and incidental scores for a number of plays.
