Arcangelo Corelli

1653-1713

Born shortly after his father's death, Arcangelo Corelli began music lessons early and quickly rose to fame as one of the finest violinists in Rome. Supported by a succession of patrons, Corelli only later began to write music of his own; he would eventually become the first composer to find success by writing only instrumental music. (Students of music theory may be amused to know that Corelli was also the object of considerable scandal when parallel fifths were discovered in one of his published compositions.)
