Francesco Maria Veracini

1690 - 1768

Francesco Veracini left home at the age of 21 and set out in search of work as a freelance violinist. He was by all accounts an odd fellow, and many passing acquaintances began to fear for his sanity. In 1716, Veracini wrote a set of sonatas that he dedicated to a famous nobleman in a shameless attempt to conjure up a job. The job was conjured, but the good wishes of his new colleagues were apparently not part of the package: a few years after his arrival, Veracini fell from a third-story window and swore that he had been pushed. Given his history of mental instability, everyone ignored his claim. Whichever story one believes, it is certainly fortunate that Veracini did not die; his greatest compositions - and all of his operas - were still to come.
